Meet our teachers

If you are an Unlimited Learning member, there is no limit to the number of people in your household who can take classes or the number of classes they may attend from the main schedule. This is an amazing opportunity for everyone to learn a wide variety of Jewish subjects at a very low cost.

Unlimited Learning and Room613 Community members can also add subjects of interest to their learning plan by choosing electives and supplementary classes. Many new classes are offered for the 2011-2012 year! See below for complete descriptions.

If you still don't see what you are looking for, please click here to request a class that meets your needs. If your suggestion would be of interest to others as well, we will consider adding it to the main schedule or as a supplementary class. Also, if we hear requests from enough members for an additional (higher) level of a particular subject, we will try to make that available. Otherwise, a private class can be arranged (reduced rates for Unlimited Learning members).

All times are Eastern Time, except where otherwise noted.

* Jewish History with Dr. Nicole Brackman *

Jewish History I (Davidic Period - Destruction of the First Temple)

When you read and learn Tanach, do you have a sense of the historical and social background against which the events took place? Do you know which famous people from history lived at the time of King David, King Shlomo, or the later prophets? Which Jewish figures might have had conversations with the great philosophers Aristotle or Plato? What was happening in world history while the events of early Jewish history were unfolding?

Our textual tradition is full of history, and history is full of our tradition—but many people never learn how Torah, Jewish history, and general world history connect. In this class we will go outside the Biblical narrative and examine Jewish history from the 'outside in.' For example, King David's amazing achievement was not only to build a unified Jewish nation in the Land of Israel—it was also to make Israel a key player in the Middle East.

Join us as we travel the bumpy road of history from King David's time, through the destruction of the First Temple (586 CE) and the Babylonian Exile, the reigns of Greece and Persia (and the building of the Second Temple), through the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. You will never read the Tanach the same way again!

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1:00 - 1:30 PM

Modern Zionist & Israeli History

The modern State of Israel declared its independence in 1948, but that wasn't the beginning of the story. To understand how we got to that point, we have to go back to the 19th century and the incredible intersection of ideology, world events, and the history-making actions of some very creative and dynamic people. The Jewish people's yearning and love for Eretz Yisrael is, of course, thousands of years old. But the story of modern Zionism—how it came to be, how people started to know about and act on it, and who dreamed of it—began in Europe less than two hundred years ago.

In this course we will delve into the ideologies of both secular and religious Zionism; seek to understand the role of Zionism and nationalism in the context of world events of the 19th and 20th centuries; and trace the seeds, planting, growth, and finally, the independence and maturation of the State of Israel.

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2:00 - 2:30 PM

* Money Management for Children and Parents:
A Practical Approach from a Jewish Perspective *

Instructor: Mr. Konstantin Litovsky

Parents often say that one of the biggest reasons they don’t talk to their children about money and family finances...is because they simply don’t know how to talk to them about it!

This introductory class for children and their parents will teach basic principles of money management, drawing on lessons from the Torah and Talmud. The class will facilitate parents and children working together on joint, hands-on, and practical real-life projects, to help teach children how to manage money.

We will deal with such topics as: budgeting, learning to become self-sufficient, and dealing with debt. We will also discuss a number of potential joint projects on which both children and their parents can collaborate, such as opening online bank accounts, reading and analyzing bills and credit card statements, and other projects designed to involve your children in family finances.

Tuesdays, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Frequency: once a week for four weeks (start date to be determined)
For children and their parents...together!
